Placenames Australia is again seeking applications for a $1,000 grant for a place-name project in your local area, which is expected to involve searching documents and archives of primary and secondary sources.  This will not involve the retelling of prior published research.  The grant is not necessarily intended to defray the costs of the project, but may be used to support the general work of the society.

The deadline for applications is 1 July 2013.  For more information, or to download the proposal form, go to the website of Australian National Placenames Survey.

Gippsland Gowns through the Decades

Louise Hill-Coleman at the exhibition, wearing one of the evening gowns.
A delightful exhibition of gowns loaned by local women was held in Heyfield in May.  If you go to this link, you can see some images of the gowns in the exhibition, and listen to an ABC local radio story interview with Louise Hill-Coleman, pictured above, who talked about the history of the gowns.(Click on Audio.)  Louise reports that it was a very successful exhibition, and a great fund-raising idea for other societies.
